Dean Olson, 83, passed away at the Suncoast Hospice in Largo, Florida on July 10, 2018.

A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, July 21, 2018, at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Dayton. Private burial will be in the Dayton Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place in Florida at a later date. For online obituaries & condolences visit: www.carsonstappfuneralhome.com

Dean was born on February 11, 1935 in Boone County to Rudolph and Anna (Johnson) Olson. He married Joyce Jensen on June 9, 1956 and they made their home in Dayton, Iowa where they raised their 2 daughters. He worked at Jensen Dairy, Hormels, and owned Olson Construction.

Dean enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, and looking for mushrooms. He excelled in all sports, but watching Dean hurl the softball was pure entertainment. Dean started his softball competition with the Boxholm Swedes in 1952 after completing an outstanding career in high school basketball and baseball at Boxholm High School. He was inducted into the Iowa Softball Hall of Fame in 1986. He passed on his love of many sports to his daughters and grandkids.

Dean is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joyce Olson, daughters Julie (Jeff) Semprini, Susan (Jeff) Muench; grandchildren, Sara, Rachel, Chelsey, Nathan, Nolan; great grand daughter Julia; siblings Jeanette Sprecher, Bill Olson, Bob Olson, Gene Olson, and Judy Outtrim and extended family and friends. Dean was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Janice Doran and JoAnn Anderson.

FUN! This man had fun in his life and expressed it fully through his wife, daughters and families. Happiness should be the description of how he approached life and he shared it with all he met. Thankful to have been exposed to a man who never knew a stranger! Sorry he slipped away to higher duties, so heaven will be enjoying him now. Hugs to you all, and appreciate the time you had with someone so special! Your friends, Rich and Judy Burnell

Please accept my condolences. We are certainly looking forward to our Heavenly Father's promise at Isaiah 65:17, 22-24. Until His promise is fulfilled, may your faith be strengthened in the only one who can bring about righteous conditions.

To Sue, Julie, Joyce and family: Sorry to hear about Dean's passing. I remember Dean helping our Dayton girls softball team prepare for tournaments a couple of times. Good sense of humor and a seriously fast pitcher. May your saddness soon fall away and leave you only with memories of the good times.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you Joyce, you Julie, and you Susan and your families.

We had such a wonderful time with you guys on a Florida beach earlier this year. We opened up the "scrap book" and laughed and laughed! What great memories and fun stories!

At a time like this, I do need these words: God didn't promise days with pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain, but He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears, and light for The Way!

DeanO...RIP my friend! You were one the the best...and then some!

Our love,
John and Stephanie Muench

My thoughts are with the Olson family during this very sad time. We had so much fun over the years at Okoboji having fish fries and cocktails. I think Dean could catch a fish in a mud puddle. I will miss him when I am fishing but will always treasure the times we had. Thank you Joyce for sharing Dean so you could shop and we could fish. Kent

Joyce, Jules and Blue,

So sorry for your loss of DeanO. What a guy What fun we all had on and off the UNI or Bomber/Bomberette softball fields! He made pitching look so easy. His height and stride so imposing only 46' away. And it got really fun when he was PO'd at an umpire.

We will all miss his big bear hugs and laughter.
