A life remembered.

Dean "Bud" Sturtz, 89, of Ogden, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, December 2, 2015, at Westhaven Community in Boone of heart complications.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 7, 2015, at Zion Lutheran Church in Ogden. Pastor Wade Brandt will officiate. Burial will be at Glenwood Cemetery in Ogden. Dean Eugene Sturtz was born on August 12, 1926, in Boone, the son of Clarence and Florence (Davis) Sturtz. He graduated with the Ogden High School class of 1945.

On August 31, 1947, Dean was united in marriage to Zoe Phipps. The couple made their home in Ogden where Dean worked on the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and served on the Ogden Fire Department. Zoe worked for Dr. Vermillion until her death on October 2, 1973.

Dean later married Viola Fridholm on July 21, 1975. Dean and Viola lived in Ogden where he continued his work on the railroad for a total of 42 years and his service to the Ogden Community on the Fire Department for 35 years. At one time three generations of the Sturtz's served at the same time; Dean, son, Rick, and grandson, Chris. Dean was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church where he served as a trustee and usher for several years. He also enjoyed his garden, woodworking, playing cards, and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Zoe Sturtz, two sisters, Lois (Sturtz) Olson of Boone, Mary (Sturtz) Phipps of California, and one brother, Darrel Sturtz of New Jersey.

Survivors are his wife of 40 years, Viola Sturtz of Ogden, Iowa; son, Rick (Pat) Sturtz of Ogden, Iowa; daughter, Micky (Larry) Davis of Dallas Center, Iowa; step-children, Janine (Douglas) Cohen of Boston, Steve (Kathy) Fridholm of Omaha, and Karen Francis, Phoenix; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandsons; one sister, Delores (Howard) Krause of Spirit Lake, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be left to either: the Ogden First Responders, Ogden Fire Department, or Zion Lutheran Church.
