Twila Mackowiak, 71, of Ogden, Iowa, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2017, at the Boone County Hospital in Boone.

Twila Mae Smalley was born on May 30, 1945, in Boone, Iowa, the daughter of Russell and Eva (Harris) Smalley.

Twila graduated High School in 1963. After graduation she attended McPherson College in Kansas.

In 1970, Twila was united in marriage to Steven Batitsas in Beaver, Iowa. To this union one son was born, Tim. The couple made their home in Chicago. They later divorced. She worked as a social worker for the State of Illinois. In 1996 Twila married David Mackowiak. Twila retired in 2005. She moved to the Ogden Manor in 2012.

She was a member of the Douglas Park Church of the Brethren in Chicago, she enjoyed puzzles, reading, and watching the show Gun Smoke.

She is survived by her son, Tim (Jennifer) Batitsas of Chicago, Illinois, granddaughter, Emmalyn Amy "Mae" Batitas; six step children; Marcella Mackowiak, David Mackowiak, Melody (Michelle Sheedy) Mackowiak, Brandon (Yanit Rivera) Mackowiak, Melissa (Lovell) Baker, and Asia Mackowiak; ten step grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Evans of Beaver, Iowa; one brother, Paul (Carlene) Smalley of Nebraska City, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband David Mackowiak in 1997, two sisters, Donna Moser and Evelyn Lansing; one brother, Dale Smalley.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
